6 Tips on How to Manage Your Dog’s Allergies

Allergies can really mess up anyone’s day. For a dog, it can even be rougher. It’s up to us as their owners to help our canine companions through their symptoms and make it easier for them to live healthy and normal lives even despite their allergies. Here are some handy tips to help you manage allergies with dogs.

    1. Start your dog on flea control measures if you haven’t already. Fleas are a common and major allergen for dogs, so if you haven’t already started on giving your pet regular anti-flea treatments, start doing so. Buying a custom dog collar with anti-flea qualities or treatment is always a good start, but make sure to involve flea shampoos and flea combs as well. Take care to be vigilant as well: if you see your dog nipping at its fur or scratching itself often, it may be a sign of flea infestation.
    2. Clean or replace your dog’s bedding. Fleas and other allergens tend to stick to any surface where your dog comes into contact with, so you can be sure that there’s a lot of them hiding in your pet’s bedding. Either toss the bedding out and replace it entirely with a new one, or subject their bedding to a very intense and deep cleaning. After that, make sure to clean it once a week using hot water and natural detergents. Do the same for any stuffed animals or toys that your dog had been playing with prior to their allergy diagnosis, too.
    3. Clean your house. Dust is another common allergen among dogs – and humans – so you’d be doing yourself and your pet a favor if you set aside a bit more time to clean your house regularly. If you’ve got wall-to-wall carpeting, now’s the time to pull all of that off and replace it with comfortable and hypoallergenic tile or hardwood. You can also decrease the clutter around your house – too many belongings out for display can be a true dust magnet. There are some easy ways to clean up pet mess. You should follow the tips.
    4. Start giving your dog more baths. Depending on your dog’s temperament they may either love you for this or utterly despise you for it. Whichever the case, more baths – especially those that involve cold water and a medicated or hypoallergenic shampoo – will do wonders in helping alleviate your dog’s itching as well as facilitate the healing process. You can also use fish oil for dogs for healthy skin and coats. You can easily get it from online stores like Mighty Munch. It can also help in supporting heart and immune health.
    5. Check your dog’s diet. The food you feed your dog may also be a source of allergens for them. If you suspect this, then talk to your veterinarian about starting an elimination diet to see if you can pinpoint which particular food sets your pet’s allergies off. You can also look at alternative diets for your dog, such as feeding them human-grade food or a raw meat diet.
    6. Invest in an air purifier. Just like giving your house more regular cleanings, this can also benefit you as much as your dog. We all know how allergens like dust and pollen can be carried into the house by wind, so having an air purifier can allow both you and your dog to enjoy cleaner, allergen-free air to breathe in.

There we go – six great tips to get you started on self-managing your dog’s allergies. Do note, however, that even if you decide to treat your dog’s allergies on your own, it’s really much better to have your veterinarian’s green light before doing anything major. We don’t want to accidentally exacerbate your dog’s allergy symptoms, after all!
