CBD Oil: How Legal Is It in the UK, Switzerland, and the Rest of Europe?

CBD oil is the new health and wellness craze taking the world by storm. Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychotropic – meaning that it can’t get you ‘high’. This is another reason for its rise in popularity. Given that the CBD industry is projected to keep growing in the years to come, it represents a viable business venture that can lead to massive profits.

In this article, we’ll take a quick peek at the legal status of CBD in the UK, in Switzerland, and in Europe.

CBD Oil Legal Status in the UK

CBD is legal in the UK as long as the THC content is lower than 0.2%. However, CBD flowers are outlawed regardless of their origin or THC content.

In case you want to sell CBD in the UK, a license is required and other guidelines need to be followed, depending on the product category you intend to sell – cosmetics and vape products, for example, have specific guidelines that need to be adopted.

    Swiss Legislation on CBD Products

Switzerland is almost the polar opposite in this matter. Firstly, Switzerland allows a THC content of up to 1% but you still need to be at least 18 years old to purchase such products.

Additionally, a great variety of CBD products can be purchased in the country, including flowers, oils, cosmetics, and CBD cigarettes. You can find them online and in physical stores alike – even in some major supermarket chains.

To grow hemp in Switzerland a license is not required as long as the THC threshold is not surpassed – no matter if you’re cultivating for personal use or on an industrial scale.

    CBD Oil Legislation in Europe

The CBD legislation in Europe is currently a complicated mess, varying from country to country. Still, the EU’s highest court doesn’t classify CBD as a narcotic drug.

In November 2020, the French government opened a case against a Czech CBD company that was selling CBD vaping products to French citizens – the EU court notoriously ruled that the restriction was unnecessary on the premise that CBD is not a dangerous substance for human health.
