Tips for Long-Term Hair Health

Your hair is one of the biggest indicators of stress and aging and is incredibly delicate. To guarantee its long-term health, you should treat your hair properly. Regardless of your hair’s texture, color, or style, you can follow these tips to help protect your hair and keep it soft and strong for years to come.

Avoid heat or use protection – Just like your skin, hair is damaged by exposure to excess heat and UV rays. If you regularly use a hairdryer or straighteners, it’s important to make sure your hair is protected first. Apply a heat protection spray before using any heated hair tools and be sure to use a UV hair spray before going out in the intense sun.

Use stem cell products –  Products like stem cell shampoo and conditioner are the latest trend in the beauty industry. Studies have shown how effective stem cells can be for revitalizing hair and skin cells, leading to better hair. Stem cell shampoos typically use plant stem cell extracts taken from natural sources, meaning you can use them ethically and help your hair recover quickly from damage.

Get the proper nutrients and vitamins – Your nutrition is a big part of your overall health, and this extends to the health of your hair too. Eating properly and being sure to get enough vitamins, particularly from fresh fruit, can make a world of difference to your hair. Your hair follicles need proper nutrients to build strong and healthy hair. If you struggle to get enough fruit or veg in during your day, you can always use a supplement or multivitamin to make sure you’re getting enough.

Use a sulfate-free, all-natural shampoo – Lots of shampoos contain sulfates and other unnatural ingredients that can strip your hair of its natural oils. Make sure you use a shampoo that contains no sulfates and preferably uses natural and organic ingredients. Natural ingredients are always better for your hair and scalp and can help repair your hair.

Properly cleanse your hair and scalp regularly – How often you wash your hair is up to you, but sticking to a routine and keeping it regular helps to keep your hair looking great. Your scalp is also important as if left uncleaned, it can build up with oils, blocking pores and follicles. Take care of your scalp by gently massaging your head as you wash your hair, being careful not to use your fingernails to scratch the skin.

Use cold water at the end of your wash – Heat can damage your hair, so you should avoid scalding hot showers. Wash your hair using lukewarm water, and once you finish, use a cold blast of water. This cold treatment helps to lock in the moisture and color of your hair, keeping it strong and healthy.

Avoid frequent coloring and bleaching – You can get your hair professionally colored at a salon with minimal damage. However, coloring too frequently or dying your hair yourself are good ways to cause lots of unnecessary damage. If you do dye your hair, avoid any dyes that contain ammonia and be sure to use a proper conditioner regularly.

Use a brush that’s designed for your hair type – Using the wrong type of hairbrush can lead to destroyed and broken strands of hair. The last thing you want to do is go to all this other effort and then ruin it by having the wrong type of brush. Different hair types need different types of hairbrushes.

Protect your hair at night – Keeping your hair in good condition and free of breakage is difficult during the day. At night, you can keep it wrapped up in a satin or silk scarf or pillowcase. This will leave it looking great each morning.

Destress – Stress is one of the leading causes of hair damage, and anything you can do to relax is going to help your hair and skin. Do everything you can to reduce stress, and you’ll soon see the results in your hair!
